Physics Made Simple: How to Actually Understand It

Physics isn't about memorizing formulas - it's about understanding how the world works. Here's how to study physics so the concepts (and the math) finally click.

Physics trips up plenty of capable students - not because it's impossible, but because they study it the wrong way: memorizing formulas instead of understanding ideas. Physics is really the study of how the world works, and when you grasp the concepts, the formulas become tools that make sense. Here's how to actually understand physics.

Why students find physics hard

Physics combines abstract concepts, real math, and multi-step problem solving all at once. Many students try to memorize which formula to plug in, which falls apart the moment a problem looks unfamiliar. The fix is to understand what's actually happening first - then the math follows.

Understand the concept before the formula

Before touching an equation, ask: what's physically going on here? What's pushing or pulling, speeding up or slowing down, gaining or losing energy? Once you can picture the situation, the right formula becomes obvious and you can adapt it to any version of the problem.

Master the math behind it

A lot of physics struggles are really math struggles - algebra, rearranging equations, units, and (later) trig. If the numbers are where you get stuck, strengthening those math skills directly makes physics dramatically easier.

Draw every problem

  • Sketch the situation and label everything you know.
  • Draw force diagrams, motion arrows, or circuits to make it concrete.
  • Write down what you're solving for before you start.
  • Always track units - they catch mistakes and often show the way.

Practice problems the right way

  • Work lots of problems - physics is learned by doing, not reading.
  • Try it yourself before looking at the solution.
  • Review every mistake to find the concept behind it.
  • Explain your reasoning out loud to test real understanding.
