Your GPA
- / 4.0
Pick a grade and enter credits for at least one course.
Uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, ...). Schools vary - some weight honors/AP courses higher or treat A+ above 4.0 - so check your school's official scale.
How GPA is calculated
Your GPA is a credit-weighted averageof your grade points. Each letter grade maps to points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, and so on). Multiply each grade's points by that course's credit hours, add them up, and divide by your total credits. Bigger classes (more credits) pull your GPA more than smaller ones - which is why a low grade in a 4-credit course hurts more than the same grade in a 1-credit elective.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate GPA?+
Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those up, and divide by the total number of credits. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit class and a B (3.0) in a 3-credit class gives (4.0x3 + 3.0x3) / 6 = 3.5. This calculator does that automatically as you type.
What is the 4.0 GPA scale?+
On the standard unweighted 4.0 scale, an A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0, and F is 0.0, with pluses and minuses in between (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on). Your GPA is the credit-weighted average of those points.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?+
An unweighted GPA treats every course on the same 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses - honors or AP classes might be scored on a 5.0 scale - so a weighted GPA can exceed 4.0. This tool calculates an unweighted GPA; check your school's official policy for how it weights advanced courses.
Is this GPA calculator free?+
Yes - it's completely free, runs in your browser, and stores nothing. Enter each course's grade and credit hours to see your GPA update instantly.
