How to Help Your Child Get Better at Math

Math builds on itself, so small gaps snowball. Here's how to spot them, rebuild the foundation, and help your child go from dreading math to actually getting it.

Math is different from most subjects: it builds on itself. A shaky grip on fractions makes algebra harder, and a weak spot in algebra makes calculus feel impossible. That's why a child who's "just not a math person" is usually a child with a few unfilled gaps that keep snowballing. The good news is those gaps are findable and fixable. Here's how to help your child get better at math - and start enjoying it.

Find the real gap, not just the wrong answer

When your child gets a problem wrong, the mistake on the page is rarely the actual problem. A missed algebra question might really be a fractions gap from two years ago. Before drilling more of the same, work backward to the earliest concept they're unsure about and start there. Fixing the foundation makes everything above it suddenly easier - it's the highest-leverage thing you can do.

Aim for understanding, not memorizing

Kids who memorize steps without understanding them do fine until the problem looks slightly different - then they're stuck. Kids who understand why a method works can adapt it anywhere. Ask "why does that work?" and "can you explain it to me?" more than "what's the answer?" A child who can teach a concept back to you genuinely owns it.

Practice a little, often

Math is a skill, like a sport or an instrument, and it responds to short, regular practice far better than occasional cram sessions. Fifteen focused minutes most days beats a two-hour marathon once a week. Spacing the practice out - revisiting a topic a few days after first learning it - is one of the most reliable ways to make it stick.

Tackle math anxiety head-on

For a lot of kids the biggest barrier isn't the math - it's the fear of getting it wrong. Praise effort and strategy rather than being "smart," treat mistakes as information instead of failures, and avoid passing on your own "I was never good at math" story. A calm, patient, judgment-free environment is where confidence - and progress - come back.

Make math real

  • Cook together and double or halve the recipe (fractions and ratios).
  • Work out the total, tax, and change at the store (decimals and percentages).
  • Calculate travel time, speed, and distance on a trip.
  • Compare prices per unit to find the better deal.
  • Budget an allowance or a small savings goal (addition, planning, percentages).

Know when to bring in a tutor

If your child is falling behind, dreading math class, or you're both getting frustrated at the kitchen table, a tutor can change the whole picture. A good math tutor does exactly what's hard to do at home: diagnoses the real gap, rebuilds the foundation, and works at your child's pace with patience and none of the emotional baggage - so math stops being a battle.
